The Winning Side follows Nia as she becomes involved in a school election inspired by New Zealand’s democratic system. Students encounter key democratic concepts including candidates, campaigning, agendas, policies, voting, representation, leadership, and public participation. As debate develops over whether the school’s bush block should be replaced by sports facilities, students explore how democracy requires balancing different interests and ensuring all voices are heard. Nia ultimately campaigns for students whose views had previously been overlooked, demonstrating the importance of representation within democratic decision-making.
