Chinese New Zealanders traces the experiences of Chinese migrants from the arrival of Chinese gold miners in Otago in 1866 through to contemporary New Zealand society. Students learn about migration, hardship in southern China, the gold rush era, discriminatory laws such as the poll tax, changing attitudes during World War II, and the growing recognition of cultural diversity in modern New Zealand. The text highlights both the challenges Chinese New Zealanders faced and their significant contributions to New Zealand society, culture, and economy.
