Consider this:
- Evidence points to New Zealand having the most degraded natural environment on earth.
- 80% of our native species are threatened with extinction.
- Amongst developed nations we have some of the worst social indicators per capita – homelessness, suicide amongst youth and incarceration of indigenous people being but three examples.
Sustainability isn’t a compulsory subject in the NZ curriculum, it should be. Rather it is a value to encourage, model and explore (p10 NZC). A sustainable future ultimately comes down to how we think and the values that underly that thinking.
Thinking facilitates actions that facilitates impacts – both towards people and our whenua.
Let’s make those impacts sustainably beneficial for the future of our planet and our tamariki.
